Gastlosen Tour - great scenery and flora in the Swiss Pre-Alps
What’s the best way to spend the day in Switzerland when the grand parents take care of the kids? Go hiking, and that’s what we did, without kids in a long time - the hike chosen was the Gastlosen tour, at a colleague’s recommendation. The internet was also mentioning the great scenery and flora, and it was exactly like that.
We take the chairlift from Jaun and start the hike counter clockwise on the side in Canton of Fribourg.
Flora and scenery are very nich right from the start

We need to go round the Gastlosen Mountains, here far left

Half an hour with high tempo, and we are getting closer to the rocky summits:

Flowers

Flowers also at the “Chalet du soldat” restaurant terrace:

Stop to tank some energy for the difficult part of the ascent

The ascent to the highest point of the hike is a bit steeper, but manageable with the rocky summits on the left side

and wide valley with flowers on the right side

Reached the highest point of the hike, but go a little higher for an even better view

The Rüdigen summit (top) in the background is one hour away from this point, better leave something for next time
Better pause and have a look at the Gastlosen chain

Three steps higher for a better panoramic view

We descend on the other side, now in the canton of Bern, accompanied by the Bernese Alps most of the way

Wide meadows

and rocky flat mountains here

Three quarters on the way, it’s time to cool the feet

Say goodbye to the Gastlosen chain and head into the forest for a good piece of descent

Jaun village in the valley and the scenery starts to look familiar, almost there

There

Can’t wait for the other grand parents to come visit in August, and if the weather is right we’ll definitely try another hike - stay tuned!
